Buying a used car in the DRC: paperwork and inspections

Updated August 2026

The documents to demand and the checks to make before buying a used car: owner, chassis number, test drive, mechanics.

Paperwork first

A car without proper papers is a problem you inherit from the seller. Only discuss the price once you have seen the documents.

  • The registration card (the "carte rose") — the name on it must be the seller's, matching their ID. A seller who is not the registered owner is a warning sign.
  • The chassis number — compare the one on the document with the one stamped on the vehicle (windscreen, door pillar, engine bay). It must be identical and free of scratch marks.
  • The road tax sticker, insurance and technical inspection — check they are up to date, or ask what will need to be regularised.
  • The history — ask for maintenance invoices, and where and when the car was bought.

Inspection and test drive

  • Look at the car in daylight and dry: differences in shade between doors, uneven paint joints, traces of rust or accident.
  • The engine cold — it must start without blue or black smoke and without metallic noises. Check the oil level and colour.
  • The tyres — uneven wear points to a front-axle problem. Check the spare wheel and jack.
  • The road test — at least twenty minutes, with firm braking, corners and a climb: look for vibrations, pulling to one side, gearbox jerks.
  • The mileage — compare the odometer with the wear on the steering wheel, pedals and seat: a very low reading on a very worn car is suspect.
  • A trusted mechanic — if they come along or inspect the car, the few dozen dollars paid are easily recovered.

Closing the sale

Draw up a bill of sale signed by both parties, with full identities, the chassis number and the price, and have the change of owner registered with the relevant services. Do not hand over the full amount before receiving the original papers and the keys.

For a large amount, prefer a payment that leaves a trace (Mobile Money or bank transfer) over cash, and make it in front of a witness.
